MediaPro Magic completed visual effects for Horror movie directed by Fruit Chan
MediaPro Magic completes the postproduction services offered by MediaPro Studios with the VFX dimension.
Lately MediaPro Magic`s team was involved in several projects
for film and advertising industry like "Fire & Ice", with 532
VFX shots completed in an incredible record time of 8 months
including building the facility and the team; and Joe Bro
commercials that was animated and edited by the visual effect
creative team headed by Sebastian Cosor.
Recently they finished working for Don`t look up. A Distant Horizon
production in association with Videovision Entertainment and
Javelin Pictures, directed by Fruit Chan, this project is based on
the film Joyû-rei written by Hiroshi Takahashi. Evil spirits
released from old celluloid causes a film crew to slowly go insane
while in production on a new project. Don`t look up it`s a horror
movie within a horror movie with a lot of small effects, in fact
thousands of them.
For this project, MediaPro Magic team completed 105 visual effects
hot in 6 weeks. We are talking about 84 super fly effects and 21
ghost effects. The magic team had to complete tracking all moving
shots, most where moving, then add in dimension form flies. "There
were flies that were in the FG and BG, in layers, as well as some
that fly around. Particle software was used to get it through the
facility as fast as we could, but still give us creative control
and totally flexibility to adjust as required for LA editorial,
Christopher T. Wright and Brian Cox. Along with the VFX Supervisor
in LA, the magic team had to work very fast as the time lag between
the two places is 12 hours, but all obstacles where taken on and
beaten as required" said Tony Willis, Producer and VFX Supervisor
for MediaPro Magic.
"Continuity was always an issue, as sometimes the shot looked way
better, but did not work with the live action, or shots that where
being completed in LA at Himani Visual Effects with Kevin
Kutchaver, the over all Visual Effects Supervisor.
The ghost sequences had to also work for continuity, as many shots
where being again completed in LA, and did take a few goes to get
the editor in VFX in LA, and VFX in Bucharest all on the same
page…but in the end worked very well…..the sequences required some
roto and paint and some animated shadows which all worked very
well" added the VFX Supervisor.
All data was DPX 2k and all compositing was completed with Nuke.
Particle software and rendering used MediaPro Magic HP render
farm.
MediaPro Magic team is now working on design for a new "Sin City
type feature with a twist".
